Just What The Doctor Ordered
Saturday rolled around at it was time to dig again. I had probed out a nice brick lined privy under my neighbor’s fire pit. No sod to worry about on this dig. The lovely Becky and Baby J came along on this dig. Becky and I started shoveling into center of the pit. We got about a foot and a half down before we started widening the whole. A few inches over, we hit concrete. Doh! This wasn’t a brick liner at all, but a concrete lined pit. That’s a little too new even for my novice tastes. Luckily, I probed around the area and found a wood liner a few feet away. Whew, the day wasn’t wasted. Becky and I went to work on the new pit while Baby J worked on the smaller one with his plastic shovel.
As we dug into the new pit, Jeffery poked away at the smaller pit. Of course, after a few minutes of playing around, Baby J pulled out a broken bottle! After that we had to make sure the pit was safe for him to play in.
Meanwhile, in the wood liner, Becky was starting a trend. Every time she hops in a pit, she pulls out a Ball Mason jar as the first bottle. I wonder how long she can keep this up…she’s 2 for 2 so far.
Once we got down into the pit a ways, the neighbors started coming out of the woodwork. This is great for me, as it spreads awareness of my hobby and gets the other neighbors on board. This particular neighbor has a newer house (1940’s) but has a cistern from an older neighboring house. He has given me permission to poke around in there. Here he is, digging out one of the bottles we found.
At the end of the day, we turned up a couple of nice RV Pierce patent meds out of Buffalo, NY, a nice cobalt bottle, and a few random puffs and slicks. Oh, and an old Listerine bottle. So whoever lived in this house around the turn of the century had health problems and bad breath. Not a great combo. To the homeowner went one of the Pierces and most of the slicks.
Thanks to Cameron for letting us dig in his yard. Thanks also to the lovely Becky for jumping in this hobby with me with both feet. Thanks to Bubba for being good and spending most of the day playing in the baby pit.
